PILATES

Pilates is a system of exercise evolved from the teaching and practice of Joseph Pilates who pioneered a method of physical and mental training aimed at conditioning the body in ways which integrate body awareness with quality of movement.

Basic elements of the method are: concentration, control, centring, alignment, relaxation, awareness, precision, breathing and quality and flow of movement.

Pilates can improve your quality of life by enabling you to use your body gracefully and efficiently, improving your posture and increasing your core strength, your flexibility and your range of movement. At the same time because of its emphasis on the importance of body awareness and concentration it can reduce stress and promote a feeling of bodily confidence and well being.

The exercises consist of a balanced sequence of slow, controlled movements which condition the deep postural muscles that strengthen and support the spine, as well as stretching and conditioning the whole of the body.

In practice a Pilates Class will include the following elements:

A Warm-up/Mobilisation section to include:

•The Pilates ‘Set-up’ (instruction in basic techniques of alignment, breathing, balance and engagement of the deep postural muscles)
•Mobilising exercises for all major joints

A Main Matwork Session to include:

•Modified, mat based strengthening and mobilising exercises
•Release/stretch moves linking the exercises

A Relaxation/Cool Down session to include:

•Stretches
•A short relaxation session aimed at calming mind and body

Class members can expect to receive individual attention and modification of the exercises appropriate to their specific needs and/or difficulties.

NLP

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can be seen as an owner's manual for the human brain. It's the study of how we think, feel and act, marked by an intense curiosity about how (rather than why) human beings get the results they do.

NLP is a fairly recent development, originating in the United States in the mid-seventies. A group of talented people led by Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of Santa Cruz came together to share information and insights across disciplinary boundaries. It incorporates insights from behavioural and Gestalt psychology, family therapy, hypnotherapy, linguistics, information theory and anthropology, among many other disciplines.

A wide variety of issues can be resolved with NLP, examples of this are unwanted habits and behaviours, fears and phobias, panic attacks and anxiety, addictions and obsessive compulsive disorder, depression , stress and insomnia, stammering, health and weight issues, relationship issues, past trauma, and painful memories to name but a few.

Sessions usually last 55 minutes and given the effectiveness of the approach, many less sessions are needed when compared to more traditional forms of counselling
